crimped cirlip

Postby Stricted » 20 May 2018 0:53

Hello all

i have a euro profile half cylinder here and i want to take it apart
the problem is that there is no circlip, instead it looks like they used something like a copper/brass washer and crimped it on
there is not really room for tools

and suggestions on how to remove that "clip"?

Any locksmith who is familiar with these feel free to correct me, but the only way to disassemble that lock is to peel that circlip out. Not really sure how to reinstall the clip and have it snug like it is from the factory.

sadly not as its a full ring
the only way to remove it in the first place is currently destroying the clip (using a saw to cut it)
i was hoping for a non destructive way
anyway thanks for the replies
have to get new circlips now :D

Would think you could remove insides of lock, then slide clip out? Seems like removing that clip, it would just add play. Look under those notches as you rotate.? Just guessing Hopefully better info will follow.

I suspect that circlip has a break in it somewhere. It is simply a matter to find the break and gently pry it open until it will slip off the plug. Replacing it later will be the same. Put it in place and then gently tap a flat tipped tool to set it down into the groove. You will have to rest the back of the clip on another thin plate so the clip will close all the way down on the sides and tips. It will be better if the supporting plate has curve matching the radius of the clip filed into it.

when i remove the clip it gives the core free, otherwise the clip rotates with the core and hold it in place

sadly no the clip has no break in it, here is a picture of one that i removed with a saw (i will take one of the disassembled lock later aswell)

also that ring is really stiff so you have to apply alot of fore to get it off after cutting it carefully

I now see how this ring holds the plug in. You are right. it is a full ring. The plug has very small slots only on two sides. Apparently the plug fits through the ring and then the ring is crimped only on where the two slots are. To get it apart you would have to prevent the ring from turning with the plug. When it is about 90 degrees off, the plug can be forced out. Put it back together by aligning the flats in the ring with the slots on the plug. Push the plug through the ring and re-crimp at the slot locations.

Could you use a shim to locate the flats on the plug or on the ring?
