wrench in the way of the pick!

Postby Saberpick » 21 Mar 2005 11:13

hey, i currently hav 2 pick all my locks with the wrench at the bottom turning it (the pin side [looking at it with the pins at the bottom.]) i have watched videos of people picking them with the wrench at the top but i find that when i try that it gets in the way of my pick and i cant get in to rake the pins. am i doing it wrong or should i just stay picking at the bottom? :?:

For Euro cylinders (with pins at the bottom) I tend to hand pick with a tension wrench at the top as it feels more comfortable, just occasionally changing the wrench to suit the keyway. Using a pick gun, I have more success with the wrench at the bottom in front of the pins.

If it works for you then carry on with your wrench at the bottom! If you want to use a wrench at the top and it's getting in the way then try a smaller one so it angles into the keyway differently giving you more room.

in that case stick with the tension wrench where it is, there are no rules about where to put a tension wrench when you pick, you just put it where it suits you and your picking style, if you find a way that allows you to pick the lock, use it, if you find it stopping you picking the lock properly, try somewhere else! :D

majestic picks have a average key extracter that makes a very good tension tool. what you do is , you use it with the spike at tyhe bottom of the key way and the rake at the top or the other way around for a euro cylinder ... anyhow the tension can be put in both directions as the extractor has a barb so the you can pull at the key cylinder instead of pushing .. even without changing hands ... which can sometimers make racking hard if your not used to either left hand or right hand raking.. dont worry about getting the wrench on the same end as the pins at the end of the day it's what's easiest for you... maybe after you master picking and raking different cylinders you can have a go at that method ... just a thought what you could do is put the extactor at the top if you like .. there's no way for it to interfere with the pins as it only nicks into the first mm or so of the lock...
