Not sure about that, but we do try to work in some kind of competition to each of our normal meetings.

I don't think so. (At least I don't go...) If you're gonna be in town though, let me know and I'll meet you. (And a few other people might be around too)

Hey guys. I haven't been around in a while but I was wondering if I could ask you guys a favor. I have a job audition tomorrow for a lecturer position where we have to give a 5 minute talk about a subject we personally find interesting. I used to be quite avid at this, and when I started doing it again this week it went great until I broke my tension wrench tonight. My interview is tomorrow at noon; I was wondering if anyone in the Austin area could lend me a tension wrench tonight or tomorrow morning? I've tried making a pair out of paperclips, tweezers, and even forks but it hasn't worked. I could pick it up anywhere and return it asap. It would mean a lot to me!

Thanks,

Khan

End of an era. After 5 years, the Longhorn Lockpicking Club has disbanded. In its place I'm starting a new Austin chapter of Locksport International. Check out the new thread for L.I Austin: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=49924

Thought I'd post the email I just sent out to the Longhorn Lockpicking Club mailing list:

After 5 great years of operation, the Longhorn Lockpicking Club is officially disbanded as of this Spring semester, 2011.

First, some background. The Longhorn Lockpicking Club (LLPC) was founded in 2006 by Doug Farre as a local university chapter of Locksport International (L.I). At the time, L.I was young and LLPC was one of the first few chapters. Over the years it grew; at one point LLPC had over 100 registered members, making it the largest L.I chapter and perhaps the largest hobbyist lockpicking organization in the nation. In late 2008 Josh Nekrep stepped down as president of L.I and turned over the role to LLPC's founder, Doug Farre. Today L.I has chapters in places such as Los Angeles California, Columbus Ohio, Houston Texas, Maryland, Missouri, as well as international interest in Canada, the United Kingdom and Austrailia.

The officers of LLPC met recently to discuss the future of the club. John Gordon (jgor), officer and one of the original members of LLPC, announced his intent to organize a new Austin chapter of Locksport International unaffiliated with The University of Texas at Austin. After much discussion it was decided that LLPC would be disbanded in favor of this new chapter.

With that I am happy to announce the establishment of L.I Austin! Here is a note from the founder, jgor:

L.I Austin, the Austin chapter of Locksport International is now established. I (jgor, John Gordon) am listed as current organizer, and previous Longhorn Lockpicking Club officers Andrei Ta and Ben Kobe are listed as assistant organizers. L.I Austin's membership is open to anyone (within the confines of Locksport International's by-laws). Meetings and membership will be coordinated through http://www.meetup.com/li-austin, which will serve as its official website.

I envision L.I Austin as a casual roundtable-style club, where members meet as peers to discuss and practice the hobby of locksport; I see this as in contrast to the more formal lecture-style, officer-led meetings of Longhorn Lockpicking Club. For those who've been around long enough to remember LLPC's early "informal meetings" at Spider House, that is the spirit I'd like to embody with L.I Austin.

We encourage everyone to sign up on L.I Austin's website, http://www.meetup.com/li-austin, to keep up with future news and announcements. L.I Austin has already announced its first meeting as this coming Saturday at 7pm at Spider House (probably out back at the picnic tables), we hope to see many of you there! If you think you can make it, head over to the meeting announcement page and let us know by signing up.

If you have any questions about the transition, don't hesitate to email longhornlockpicking@gmail.com or send a message through L.I Austin's meetup website. Thank you for 5 years of fun lockpicking at UT, let's keep the spirit alive with L.I Austin!

FYI, two freshmen have revived the club on campus. They've held weekly meetings for the last 4 weeks with excellent attendance (between 10 and 20 people each meeting). Now that the semester is done meetings will be on hold, but they should pick back up again weekly for the Spring semester. I'll keep the website updated as the meeting schedule is finalized and should be in regular attendance at the meetings. Come check it out if you're at or near UT!

The schedule thusfar has been weekly on Tuesdays at 7pm, so I'd plan on it being the same schedule this Spring.

First meeting of the semester is tomorrow (Tues, 9/4)! Here's the email that went out to members:

Hey Members,

Our first meeting of the semester is tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7PM at PAR 310 (northwest building in the six-pack). The meeting schedule is as follows: 9/4, 9/18, 10/2, 10/16, 10/30, 11/13, 11/27 and 12/4 (every other Tuesday except the last meeting).

We're making several changes for this semester:

1) Every meeting is going to cover a different topic. Only the first meeting will be going over the intro Lockpicking 101 stuff. Afterwards there will be presentations on new topics. Either Reid or I will still go through the basic LP101 primer with any newcomers individually, but the focus will be on a new topic, following this tentative schedule:

9/4 - Lockpicking 101 - what's inside a typical lock, and the basics of picking them
9/18 - Disassembling and Repinning a Lock - taking apart a standard 5-pin lock, and reassembling it so old keys won't work
10/2 - Lock Bypass Techniques - taking the path of least resistance - learn how to get handcuffs, combo locks, etc. open with improvised tools
10/16 - Security Pins and High-Security Locks - pick-resistant locks? No problem
10/30 - Other Lock Designs - Wafer, warded, disc-detainer, lever ... and the techniques to defeat them
11/13 - Master-Keyed Systems - how masterkeys in your dorm/apartment work, and how to make your own!
11/27 - Key Impressioning - learn how to make a key given just a lock...
12/4 - Safe Manipulation - fun with safe-cracking (Ocean's 11 anyone?)

2) Following the presentation every meeting, you'll have an opportunity to practice what you've just learned, and then we'll have a competition! There will be prizes, so brush up on your skills!

9/4 - This week will be speedpicking - how quickly can you pick through a variety of common locks? The prize for the winner will be 5-piece lockpick set (subsequent prizes are still TBD).
9/18 - Disassembling/Reassembling a lock - how quickly can you take apart a 5-pin lock and put it back together in working condition? Tougher than it sounds!
10/2 - Are you the next Houdini? See if you can escape out of handcuffs and pick your way to freedom using just bobby pins, paper clips, and other improvised tools.
10/16 - Speedpicking II - this time focusing on some locks with tricky security pins.
10/30 - Speedpicking III - this time featuring some unique lock designs
11/13 - Master keys - see if you can make a working master key
11/27 - Key Impressioning - see if you can create a working key given a lock, key blank, some tools, and a lot of patience!
12/4 - Lockpickin' Wizard - How many locks can you pick while blindfolded?

The speedpicking competition will be a double elimination tournament modeled after past LockCon Speedpicking world championships, as follows:
Everyone interested in competing will add their name to the signup sheet. Competitors will be randomly paired up, and each person will be given a lock. Competitors will be given 7 minutes to try to pick their lock, after which they will trade with their partner and given another 7 minutes to pick the new lock. The winner of each pair advances to the top tier and the loser advances to the bottom tier. New pairs will be formed and the process is repeated, this time with 5 minute rounds. Once you have lost twice you are out of the game. Rounds will continue until all but the winner have been eliminated.

A couple of rules to keep things fair: You can only win 1 competition prize a semester, and we officers won't be participating :)

3) Starting with the second meeting, you'll be able to earn points by cracking particularly hard locks. Those who end up with the most points by the end of the semester get prizes (TBD).

4) To those who don't yet have picksets or want some practice locks - starting at the next meeting, we'll be offering a beginner kit with everything you need to get started: a high-quality 5-piece pickset and carrying case, a 5-pin pin tumbler lock that's easily disassembled, an extra practice padlock, and the LI Guide to Lockpicking. Beginner kits will be $20.

Dues will be $20/semester, and are critical in order to provide new locks and equipment for all the exciting new topics we have planned, so please bring dues to the meeting tomorrow.

Most of the stuff above is still tentative, so if you guys have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact any of the officers (CCed here).

Hope to see you guys tomorrow,
Charles

Update, in case folks are looking for info about us:

The lockpicking group in Austin is still very much alive and well, interchangeably using the names Longhorn Lockpicking Club and L.I Austin, though we're no longer officially a registered UT student organization. We meet every other Saturday, 7pm at Spiderhouse. The most reliable place to stay in touch is our Meetup group, where you'll find the official meeting calendar.
