Fort Worth, HEB, Tarrant County - Looking for Group!

Postby skeleton_keys » 22 Feb 2008 21:07

Hi all! I'm living in Bedford, Texas, and want to start up a weekly locksports club around the general HEB/Fort Worth area. I used to be a member of the UTD Locksports club, which was quite a drive for me anyways. :) I'm looking for anyone enthusiastic about learning together, to get together on the weekend either Friday night or Saturday afternoon/night.

About me...I've been involved with locksmithing and locksports since I was 17, eleven years ago. I apprenticed for a while as a locksmith in Hurst, and as I said I briefly joined the UTD club before it disbanded. I've got a good selection of tools and locks to learn with, and have a fairly broad range of techniques under my belt to teach to newcomers. (Heck, I even keep a bag of empty soda cans in my freezer for eventual padlock shim lessons. :) )

And of course, we'll be adhering tightly to the ideals of ethical locksports...criminals in potentia, please don't respond.

If I get enough interested responses, I'll look into finding a place for us to meet and find a schedule that works for everybody. (I'd use my apartment, but honestly there's no place for people to sit in here. :) ) Or if someone around here is interested and is willing to sacrifice their home once a week for a couple hours, even better!

Hope to hear from you, all messages will be answered, don't worry if you're a complete newbie, that's what this is for! :)

I will supply free picks and locks for all those that attend! Just a little incentive..

I'm on the other end of the metroplex but would love to get together sometime. I'm in Garland so a weekly drive to your neck of the woods wouldn't be likely for me but once in a while I'd do it.

Do you know of any contact info for the UTD club? Are they still meeting? They would be much closer for me but I can't find anything about them except an article with the founder but no contact info.

As far as I know, the UTD club isn't meeting anymore...Doug? You were the boss man. :) Heh, if you come out to meet us here you'll be doing the exact opposite of the long drive it was for me to go to UTD. My poor ol' minivan. She's just about to pass 200K. :) Thanks for responding, I hope we can get this together!

So far I've got a couple people interested in getting together on Saturday afternoons/evenings. I'm leaning towards evening myself. I'm going to look into whether or not TCC NE Campus would have any problem with us meeting in one of their back cafeterias. I'm also going to see about conference rooms at local libraries that might be available. Failing that, I doubt any malls would want us covering their food court tables with tools and locks, so my only other thought was maybe meeting at a public park in the afternoon, and just using the outdoor pavilioned picnic tables or something.

C'mon my Fort Worth/HEB peeps, don't be shy!

Wow...70-odd people have viewed this thread but not written me? That's weird.

Just a quick update...so far apart from vitti, I've got two girls from my work who are interested in coming, both for Saturday evenings. Not to sound genderist, but girls totally vindicate a lockpicking club...just having them there makes the whole thing way more cool and legit. :)

I'm going this weekend to see if I can put up flyers at TCC NE asking for interested students.

You know, there are still lockpickers at UTD that would love to meet up. I can send them a message and tell them about your attempts to start meeting again. If time and scheduel permit, I would love to come up and help host a meeting.

That'd be awesome doug. And if you could ask them to contact me or if they are willing to give their contact info, I'd love to meet up with them. Would be much closer to me.

Sure! Glad to meet you. If you want to PM your number to me, that's cool. So far we've got two girls, me and you, and we're trying to see if we can get together on Saturday afternoon around 2-3 PM ish. I wasn't able to get out to TCC this weekend, so we were thinking if the weather's good we could just meet at one of the pavilioned picnic table areas in the Bedford Boys' Ranch off Bedford Road and Forest Ridge Dr, in Bedford, TX 76021. We'll work out exact directions once we know for sure if the meeting's happening or not. :) Anyone else who wants to is welcome to show up, I'll post for sure before Saturday.

Well, due to a sudden burst of SNOW, in Texas???...in *March*...it looks like this weekend is off due to lack of meeting space. Loyd kindly offered to let us use his house, but I'm afraid Springtown is way too far away for the local few people that wanted to meet up. My poor van's CHECK ENGINE light came on yesterday, too. :) I guess we'll just let this thread keep running and maybe try again in a few weeks, see if we can get some more people interested, and keep looking for nearby indoor places to meet. I'll keep you posted!

Hey Austin, I just e-mailed you about this, thanks for asking! :)

The short story is, the club doesn't exist yet...everyone's had such bad scheduling conflicts, my own weekends have been way too busy (stupid new apartment needs so much work!) and we still have yet to find a good place to meet. I honestly don't know when this'll come together. Sorry!
