ABUS 64TI/50 SPP

Postby PBYOcarrol » 28 Jan 2021 9:45

Hello everyone,
I’m slowly making my way through ‘11 best practise locks’. https://www.art-of-lockpicking.com/best ... k-picking/

Lock pickers from forum101 have been a great help and got me through a lot of the locks on the list with helpful suggestions.
I am so stuck on the ABUS 64TI/50. I have tried over the last week using delectably soft to aggressively hard tension on this lock and cannot get a single pin to click as set. I’ve used both TOK and BOK, shallow and deep hooks but have not got any feedback at all.
what am I missing here?
Thx.

These may seem to be sarcastic questions, but it they are not:

Does the key work in the lock?

In which direction are you turning the key/tensioner?

Have you used your pick and checked the number of pins that are in the lock? (This is one that has bit all of us in the past)

Are all the pin stacks able to move when the plug is not tensioned?

Are you getting any of the pin stacks to bind?

Are you referring to feel or audible "click when set"?

Gordon

Hey Gordon, thanks for the help, it’s deeply appreciated.
Yes the keys work.
I am turning my tensioner clockwise.
There are 5 pins that I have checked with my pick.
All the pin stacks move freely when no tension is applied.
The only way I can get anything to bind is if I use monumental pressure with the tensioner. But this doesn’t seem to get me to a shear line.
I get the feeling through the pick and sometimes a sound but it doesn’t seem like it’s a set pin, it’s more like the friction I get when I force the pin past my tensioner resistance up through the pin stack. There also is no core movement.
I’ve been using a sparrows short hook as well as the trio of SSDEV hooks that sparrows sell, all .025.

I hope this can help?

The Titalium is an aluminum body padlock, so it can feel different than a brass body padlock when picking.

As for no pins binding unless you use a lot of force to turn the keyway, that can't be right. The key would break if that kind of force were required to turn the plug.

Try this: Put the key into the padlock. Now put your tension wrench through the hole in the key bow. Turn the key using your tension wrench. The force you need to use to turn the key is all you should need to use to pick the lock.

If you are using a lot more force than that, then you are well beyond having pins bound somewhere. Try using the pressure above, and feel each pin stack individually. One of them will bind before the others.

If you are picking a pin stack, and using the pick to lift the pins causes the plug to turn back the other way, that is called counter-rotation. That is caused by a security pin. Most commonly a spool pin.

Thx Gordon,
I tried using the tensioner through the key and it needed only a moderate amount of tension. I can’t get a pin to bite.
I’m starting to think I am over setting. Attached is a photo of the key.

What do you think?

With that bitting, I can very easily believe the pins are being overset. A High-low-high-low pattern like that is quite a bit more difficult than most bittings.

Recommend using a medium hook.

Thx Gordon, I eventually got the open.
I started to use a medium hook and found that I was over setting pin 3 while trying to set pin 4.

Congratulations! Well done.

Over setting is a common problem with the high-low bitting.
