Greets, I have been lurking here for months and I must say that my picking has improved dramatically. Picking has been a hobby for me off and on since I was a kid. I have always been interested in anything security related. I wish I had found the site sooner. Recently I have renewed my interest in high security locks. In the last few months I have worked my way up, and can now pick a lot of different locks consistently. This includes about 5 or 6 American brand padlocks with serrated spools in all 5 positions. I feel that now I may be of some help to the lockpicking community and that I should give a little back to the hobby/sport.

My favorite locks are ABUS, American, and Best. The Brinks R70 is kinda fun as well. There is always a new challenge. I would like to gain more experience with tubular locks.

I prefer to make my own picks, but I would like to try some more commercial picks to give me more ideas :) My style of picking is "whatever gets the lock open without using a key". Being a good picker in my humble opinion is more about consistency than speed. Mastering a lock is being able to open it consistently with many different methods in a reasonable time. Quick picking is great fun as well and I like to see how fast I can rake a lock open, but precise single pin picking is where it's at 8)

I look forward to opening more locks and helping others do the same.
Oh! and making more tools! Great stuff!

Since this is my first post, I am going to skim through the rules and do some searching for a bit

Hi all

Postby mfh » 22 Jul 2004 17:07

I'm new to the forum this week. I found it searching for info on a lock I'm thinking of buying. I always had an interest in locks but never went past picking the simplest and trying to figure out the code for combination locks.

My profession is in the computer field and I deal with security a fair amount of the time. It's interesting how what seems complex at some levels can really be translated down to the level of picking a mechanical lock.

I'm planning to learn to pick more complex locks for the mental and dexterity challenge and learn the science to see if I can contribute something to the field, one way or another.

I found your forum while researching something else from How Stuff Work. So I started reading about locksmithing and picking locks, I found the topics quite interesting so I thought, hey, here's something to try for a quiet little hobby. I enjoy tinkering and making stuff. I have made some picks, 11 of them so far. I found the springsteel used in hanging folders work quite well for grinding and making picks. However, I'm going to purchase some junior hacksaw blades and make some upgrades. It's been interesting making the picks. Now, I'm trying to find some locks to use them on. I have asked some friends if they have some old door locks or deadbolts they want to give up.

Sorry to ramble on I'll keep them short in the future, this is my first time in any type of a forum, I have read and the rules and I fully agree with them.

Thanks for bringing me in!

Hello to all of the problem solvers out there. I have been reading these forums for about a year or so and it has helped me tremendously. I have always wanted to become a locksmith, but it seems that being a lock hobbyist will suffice. I have the PXS-14 set from lockpicks.com and have opened a few locks with them. I practiced for hours and hours when I picked my first lock. Months later, I gave a powerpoint presentation in a speech class on the "Art of Lockpicking" with a demonstration on a small laminated Masterlock. Against my better judgement, I have recently opened several locks at my workplace for my coworkers that lost their keys (no charge of course). Hopefully I will be able to graduate to car entry methods and some safe manipulation one day because I have seen too many friends and family get locked out of their cars.

Hi all,

I've been lurking for a few weeks and thanks to all have picked up a wealth of information. I've now got some nice picks due anyday, a practice lock soon to be on its way (thanks Luke) and twitching fingers.

I just wanted to say hi and I look forward to learning a bunch more and hopefully contributing one day (and yes Varjeal, I've read the FAQ ;))
