I would advise you to start with something easy...Try a cheap padlock...If you have lockpicks you can use them...if you don't you can use safety pins, paperclips or other..Search lockpicking 101 for home-made lockpicks......You also could find posts about locks work...

hey all, brand new to the art form. Where is a good place to start reading about basics, and what kind of kit should I be looking for to start?

Hello there, new user from Chile here. I was reading a lot lately bout locks and how strong or weak they can be and what do you know, I found this site and got hocked till 6am today reading stuff here and there. I do not have the necessary tools to pick heavy locks but I've done a few desks and doors using paper clips (I know, shame on me). Anyways, good to be here and have fun with you people.

Hi y'all

Just joined up and I hope I'm doing this right. I've been reading around and found some really good info. Good job guys! I've been picking locks for fun since childhood. They always intrigued me. In my current line of work, the experience has come in handy over the years. I'm an auto technician, and it always came in handy to be able to unlock a vehicle with the keys locked inside. However, in recent years, with more electronic and computer controls, and improved theft deterent systems, we've got alot more to tackle than just slipping the pins on a cylinder. It's nice to see a forum with such a wide range of decent info. I had no idea that this was so popular.

Mostly there are pin tumbler locks around here, but of course you can find a lot of lever types around. The south of Chile is really good if you want to come on vacations, a bit cold sometimes, but beats the heat on the desert :).

hey, I'm new to this site. I've always had a nag for lock picking, ever since I was 3, picking every lock in my house. I've never looked into it as a hobby though, and I can't wait to see what I can do. :) :D

I'm new to lockpicking but find it quite interesting hobby

Postby Liquidlight » 8 Aug 2006 9:09

As I've said, I just purchased a small lockpick set at a local gun show and now I'm getting addicted to opening locks. I enjoy puzzles and this seems to be the ultimate puzzle past time for me. I'm getting pretty good (I guess) at using my pick set. I get a real charge out of watching the lock open and knowing that I have beaten a puzzle that I was meant to stay out of. I guess I'm just plain warped! :D Should I purchase a more complete set of pics? I've got locks laying all over my desk, even at work (great way to spend my lunch hour).

Thanks for having me as a member

First, download the MIT guide, found Here.

This will teach you the basics of picking.

Also go out and buy an easy beginner lock, such as a kwikset, then repin it and pick it following Digital Blues exercises. Digital Blues Exercises

Finally, read all the stickies in the FAQ section, and just poke around the site a bit, read, and learn 8) .

Hello, folks.

Like many others, I'm sure, I began my lock picking career with vile intentions in high school, breaking into filing cabinets, other students' lockers, etc. Though I never had a need to steal, for some reason I enjoyed it. Eventually I came to realize that it wasn't getting the goods that excited me, it was the process itself. So, nowadays I pick locks only for the challenge it presents. These days, I find myself more frequently locking myself out of the house on purpose to simply test my skills. It's my goal to eventually not have to carry keys anymore. With any luck this forum will help me on that quest.
