How's it going? fifured I have read through the forums soo much I might as well register and make a post. Been picking for a while but somewhat self taught so I'm looking around here for different/better ways of doing things.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt... then it's a sport!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am not new to lock picing as I can remember picking a luggage lock some twenty years ago with a bobby pin. I am an industrial engineer by education, helicopter pilot by trade, and general all around mechanic/tinkerer by practice. My interest in lock picking was renewed after watching the web video of a guy picking a Kryptonite U-Lock with an ordinary Bic pen. I have understood the concept of tension and getting the pins to match up, just never had the money to purchase a good pick set. I purchased an HPC 60 pc Professional set and poppped my first Master lock in about 30 seconds. Elation. What a thrill. Those American 5200 series locks are quite a bother. Still haven't opened one yet.
That should be goo dfor my first post.
Again, thanks for warm reception.

Hello,
Glad to join the ranks of the informed. I have been into this now for 30 years and it is really hard to find places to discuss. Most people just don't get it, and think your into something bad. Anyway, Glad to be here...and Hello to All.

Just joinded the site a few days ago. Did take the Foley-Belsaw course over 20 years ago but am now just starting to "need" a hobby to keep me entertained. Used to work with two former smiths that had their own shops, but most people around here I think would just break a window to get back into their homes than pay $50 to someone and wait.
So for me this is an extention of being a machinist (slash) learning to converse back and forth over the net besides e-mails.
I did buy a set of Rytan picks after the FB course, but I like the idea of using a photo-copier, glue and files to make new pikes.
I will try to get some practice in before I admit how long it takes me to pick a lock.

PS anyone else get the 'you must be up to no good if you learn this?'

Some time ago it occured to me that I had never officially introduced myself. Bad etiquette for forums, I know that now. Truth is, this is the first forum I've ever been involved in. But, in celebration of my 500th post, I thought it fitting to introduce myself. I have learned an absolute ton here! This community is full of fine folk who commit a lot of time here helping guys like me learn and grow and enjoy this hobby. As much as possible I've tried to give back as I continue to receive. The mods here do a great job of keeping things orderly and the advice from pros who make their living at this is so valuable!
So, thank you all for a great site, a great community, and a great bit of fun over the last several months. Hi to all the recent inductees. I hope you gain as much from this site as I have.

Greetings all,
I have been interested in lock picking ever since I found I could open those little travel locks with a bent paperclip, when I was perhaps 9 or 10 years old. Since then I have occasionally taken to locks around the house with improvised picks and tension tools, even spending a string of weekends with a locksmith friend of the family in his shop. My efforts sagged for a while, as my natural interest in security found a new focus in computers and technology.
Just recently I found myself drawn back to lock picking, and this time I went about it in a more organised fashion, researching materials and templates, and eventually grinding myself some reasonable picks out of an old hacksaw blade. While this has given me a new appreciation for what can be done with proper tools, I have decided that a proper set is required, and will soon be purchasing one.
For a while now, I have known of this site, and over time have used the forum search whenever I needed some good information on something I was working on. It is only now, though, as I read about the formation of an Australian lock picking sports group, that I have decided to join and try to take part in the community.
Appreciative of you all,
altek
