Any way to modify or replace a wafer cylinder to suck less?

Postby ballo » 26 Apr 2024 15:52

Hello.

I recently modified my bike rack lock so the key wouldn't come out in the unlocked position (not sure why this isn't the default), and it occurred to me what a POS this thing is. It's 4 wafers and a 5th retaining wafer. Basically any chimp could be trained to unlock this in under a minute.

It's the same cylinder used in most roof tracks:

Is there any way to improve this situation? I'm not asking for pick-proof, but it's so trivial to jiggle these things open I'm sure even a methhead could do it in under a minute.

It it matters I already carry keys for the truck's toolboxes/cabinets. This key is actually a little smaller, but pin based.

Looks like Thule cylinders and keys I used to have on my car.

I had this same problem years ago, I ended up running a cable lock from my bike frame through the roof rails to add another layer of annoyance to anyone who wanted to steal my bike.

I like the idea of modifying the cylinder to make it harder to pick, you're right, they're not a very secure mechanism.
