What does your key stamp say?

This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

What does your key stamp say?

Postby fsdhy » 22 Feb 2007 13:22

How much info is on your stamp? We used to have Full business name + phone number.... I'm debating whether we need the phone number, and if I can shorten the business name to something like "Sean's Keys" (for example). What do you guys have?

Also, can anyone recommend a place to get custom key stamps made? Maybe within Canada? The only place I can find is harper mfg, and its in the US.

Thanks!

i'd rather have a phone number then a name.... anything goes wrong they'll be dialing the number on the key which is $ to you

I think having both is ideal- but the number being more important. One thing to keep in mind though is that most customers don't even realize that your name and # is stamped on the key- so part of my speel when I give it to them is to say something to the effect of: "Our keys are gauranteed so if you have a problem with any of the keys, our name and # are stamped on it- feel free to come back and we will fix it."
If you always do what you have always done- you will always get what you have always gotten!

We just have our Co. name on our stamp. One line. This leaves lots of space to add any other info onto the bows of keys.

As far as where we got them, I can't help you there as they were ordered by my father over 20 years ago. I will ask him early next week if he remembers.

Name and number pre-engraved on all major blanks. Stamped on everything else we can.

People can toss a business card, but they hang on to keys. It makes it easy for them to find us again.

I don't mean for factory stamped keys... Sure, all our high security proprietary stuff comes with our full business name, phone number, address and logo. I'm talking about a handstamp for stamping the other stuff that you can't get factory engraved.

I understand that, but its not really my primary concern. We only have one other competitor around here, and he stamps his keys with simply "Kim's Keys". My primary concern is what luke77 said, the guarantee. Since all our keys are guaranteed, we've had people come back with completely different keys saying that we "copied the wrong one and it doesn't work". The stamp is basically our safeguard against that.

I'm not concerned about customers coming back... My shop has been around since the 40's, our customer base is pretty well established. We are also on good terms with our sole competition and don't have to worry about customers coming back or not.

I think I'll keep the phone # anyway. The reason I wanted to get rid of it is because its always the first thing to start wearing down. Since its longer than the business name, the first and last digits always wear down first. Aparently the previous owner bought 3 of them about 15 years ago, today I have 3 stamps with the first and last digit of our phone # worn off of them. So its time to look into new ones.
