am I wasting my time?

so, I was doing a little surfing last night, and found myself on the website for my local county clerks office. I clicked on "licenses" and pulled up the application for locksmith registration. http://www.douglascountyclerk.org/licenses.php#3
After reading through it, and thinking to myself that it almost seems TOO easy - I am now finding myself quite tempted to dig down deep and put forth the $5.00 to apply I am currently quite happy with my job, but I think it would be a good piece of paper to have in my back pocket, if and when I decide it's time for a change. since I'm not looking to start my own business anytime soon, I want to find out if I would still be able to apply. any constructive critisism would be appreciated - here's the inquiry I plan to send:
"Hello,
I am a bonded maintenance service technician for a property management company. My job includes performing all the in house locksmith duties for the two complexes I service, as well as providing lock out services for sister properties as needed. Although perhaps not currently necessary, I am interested in obtaining my locksmith registration. I would like to be able to legitimize my credentials, in regards to my work now, and in the future, by way of my resume. Since at the present time, I do not intend to open a locksmith business, would it still be worth the effort to apply? If so, would I first need to create a business? If not, how should that portion of the application be handled? Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance"

The application form does ask for the business details, so I presume your supposed to be in business!
I would not submit an application, their is a good chance you will not get a license as your not in business. This ( your application) will possibly be kept on record as a refusal and harm the chance of a future application should you decide to become a locksmith.
It's not a trivial application to make and you should only make one if your serious about it and meet all the requirements.

Ranger - thanks for the reply! that is definately one of my main concerns. I would like get to get more information on my local requirements before submitting anything. For that reason, I am considering contacting the county office with an inquiry like the example in my original post. Does anyone think that such an inquiry would be benificial, or would there be a chance that the inquiry itself could harm my future chances, if and when I apply?

Is there a space on the form for Institutional (in-house) Locksmith? It appears to me that would be the correct definition of your current position. It might be in your favor to make some in-person inquiries of the young lady behind the counter. There may be a different form for your situation.

that may not be a bad idea....I DO have a way with the ladies.... - my luck I'll get the burly ex lumberjack working the counter. -guess I'd just have to turn up the charm a notch... anyway, in the meantime, I think I will be patient and do a little more research before making any moves. thanks for everyone's replies!

Go ahead and apply for the license, as it allows you to conduct business outside of your in-house maintenance. But don't forget that to start a business, you also need to apply for local and state level general business licensing and quarterly taxation. This license alone doesn't grant you a business.
