Considering joining ALOA. Thoughts?

I've been considering joining ALOA for the past few weeks now. Haven't really discussed it with anyone at the shop I apprentice at, although I probably will ask their opinion tomorrow.

I've been an apprentice for almost 4 months now and I don't know if joining would be "jumping the gun" or if it's perfectly fine.

I don't necessarily agree with some of their policies, statements, and certifications but I feel it's important to get involved with the locksmithing community given that I would like to make this my profession.

I wanted to know if there are any other ALOA members here, or anyone who considered joining but ultimately did not, or just anyone in general who can be of some assistance in my decision making.

I had the same thoughts a while back, except just didn't have the money. A good idea would be to email the person in charge of your local ALOA, and then go to one of the meetings. Your allowed to go even if you're not officially part of it. After that you can decided if it is for you and if you're willing to spend that kind of money.

I think you have to be invited in or ask to invited to your local assoc first then move on to aloa....start local first!!!!

Aloa is pretty high,they are also very inforemative. They want to hold a higher standard for locksmiths.Their conventions have alot of info ,when they come to your area, classes you sign up for.My state assoc is pretty cool too.I respect the guys who carry the seal on their adds, your regular person dont know the difference.Id say if your employeer is a member, you should consider, the fee buys alot of tools though.

You are kind of right here. On the application you need sponsors (I believe it's 2) That are members who will vouch for you. It's not really invitation only, but starting at the state level will be a better start.

That wouldn't be a problem. I've already posed the possibility of me joining to two ALOA members at my shop and they offered to sponsor me. Seemed enthused about it too.
