When one is about to start your own company, what services do you start selling yourself for? What kind of equipment do you invest your money into? I know automotive programming is pretty lucrative but that over commercial work?

I know that the goal is to try and do it all i suppose, but at first what kind of things do people normally start with?

well i would imagine you should start with what you know how to do :lol:

maybe a list of some areas you're confident in would be a good way to get some ideas from other people and maybe spark something in your own head

I just recently started my locksmithing section of my business. We decided to do everything. Cars, remotes, safes, homes and businesses. The bigger the net, the more fish can be caught.

Go to the business section on the site. LOTS of valuable info that has helped me tons :!: :!:

Also befriend a locksmith who can show u the ropes. I did this and still use most of the lessons everyday.

As for equipement, a great thread is "What you need to start a uk locksmith business" also in the business info on this site. Great amount of info. Toomush2drink states all the tools you'd need to set a locksmithing business, brilliantly.

Pratices on your bread and butter jobs and learn other locksmithing skill as you progress. This site has a wealth of knowlege.

Buy some locks and just practice. I've read that once a skill is not practice, it is lost.

Network, network, network within your area.

You'll be suprised how many jobs other locksmiths have to pass off on because they're either too busy, not prepared, or not willing to do it.

Around my parts the automotive lockouts are probably the most lucrative. If you have AAA in your area find out what you need to participate in their program. The pay won't be as good as your own jobs but you will probably get more calls then you can handle by your self. These are only things I have observed so go out and talk to people to find out what you need in your area.

keep in mind these are my observations from managing a tow truck company that was trying to get into the AAA program.
