Customers Who Do It Themselves and FAIL

I had a customer a few months ago that tried to open their 2002 VW Jetta. They had a slim jim and supposedly knew how to use it....Except a slim jim won't do anything on that vehicle, unless you want to dislocate the door handles (which he did).

Fortunately this doesn't affect the way I open these. I picked the door lock and held it for a couple seconds until all the windows rolled down. Then reached inside and pulled the inside door handle. Then I told him to that he should go to the dealer to get the door fixed. (I had other jobs waiting and it is something I wouldn't normally fix.)

You are a better man that I am. Anytime I have a customer who damaged their car trying to open it I refuse to touch it. To many people will try to blame you for the damage later.

You should be more worried about the ones that don't tell you what they have tried, and claim that they haven't tried to open it themselves. Those are the scary ones.

But this is one of the reasons why I prefer to pick auto locks. The customers have a hard time trying to blame something on you when you didn't put anything inside the door, or pry on the door to use another tool. And there are very few vehicles on the road that you can't reasonably pick open,.. with some practice.

Either way, if you have an idea that they have tried something have them sign a disclaimer before you touch it. Or have everyone sign a disclaimer if you are worried about it.
