Vehicle Entry Business

Postby strawboss » 21 May 2010 0:16

Hey there guys, in the past few months ive become pretty good at opening vehicles.....so I thought I might be able to make some money off of this. Im in the military and there are always people locking their keys in there cars on base. I just have one question I can't seem to find an answer to. I live in the state of virginia and I was looking at the business licensing for locksmiths. Would just auto entry be considered a locksmith? There is sooooo much you have to do to get a locksmith license in virginia and you have to pay a pretty penny to get it. Here is virginia state laws definition of a locksmith:

What is a “locksmith”?
“Locksmith” means any individual that performs locksmith services, or advertises or represents to the general public that the individual is a locksmith even if the specific term locksmith is substituted with any other term by which a reasonable person could construe that the individual possesses special skills relating to locks or locking devices, including use of the words lock technician, lockman, safe technician, safeman, boxman, unlocking technician, lock installer, lock opener, physical security technician or similar descriptions.

Do you think I could I just advertise as an auto entry?

No, your performing locksmith duties simply opening a vehicle. The law is there for a good reason.

I strongly recommend you get your locksmith license for your area- will also lessen your liability if someone decides to go all sue happy, or worse.

Doing a web search for 'yellow pages locksmith scam' will give you some history of why the industry (and others) are pro-licensure. Too many scammers and skimmers.

Aside from that, you might want to do yourself a favor and develop a business plan. Before you know it you can be pretty deep into tools. Like, will you handle transponders? Specialty foreign cars? After-market alarms?
