On a daily basis i do car unlocks, house rekeys, open peoples house that have locked there keys inside, and safe openings and repair. Sometimes all the above and somethimes only one of the above just depends on the day. Hope this helps.

It's kind of region specific. My shop gets alot of calls for commercial and residential rekeys. We don't normally do car unlocks, because it's not much money, and it's a pain in the ass, not the work, but the customers, and we are normally busy enough with other work that we don't have to do it.

We also do Electronic acesss control, and lots of general commercial work, levers, panic-devices, external/internal rod exit devices, door closers, IC Core, Restricted keyways, Simplex, etc.

Like SALocksmith illustrates, your daily workload is entirely dependent on how your company is oriented. Some companies, for example, are strictly commercial and will pass off or even outsource residential or automotive jobs. I started with a company that did about 70% commercial work - so lock outs were a rarity, although I did open cars when the economy slowed down as a way to generate some extra income for the company.

You can really gauge a company's success by their clients. A well-established company will have a lot of lucrative commercial accounts that they routinely service. A newer company might be mainly residential (with some automotive work, such as lock outs). If you're ever interviewing, it's a good idea to ask about their work scope because if they're heavily commercial, you might want to familiarize yourself with specific areas of the industry, such as life-safety codes. You could almost write a book on the relationship between daily jobs and a companies' makeup but I digress.

As for me, I work as an institutional locksmith a hospital so a majority of my work involves cutting keys, servicing locks, and unlocking doors or cabinets. My morning is nearly always filled with lockouts as people arrive to work without their office or desk keys. As the day progresses, I can fill key requests by cutting keys or repairing non-emergency lock issues. I wouldn't expect an independent company to have such a routine.

Good luck.

most of our work is lock fitting and replacement...after that, lockouts. Mostly domestic.

Mostly commercial work, installs of access control, installing doors, servicing shops at malls, replacing concealed closers, door pivots, welding gate boxes in. We also contract with banks and realtors to service pool gates, foreclosures, new sales etc. I would say 70% of our work is contract work, some of it is from lock services in California, NY and elsewhere that use local locksmiths to service their national clients. Car lockouts we do if we have the time, car keys we contract out to other locksmiths, safe work we do if we have the time otherwise we contact out at least 50% of it. The jobs we contract out we still make money and in some cases the other locksmiths use our invoices and represent our company so that our customer still thinks we are handling the job. On other jobs they just give us a kickback for the job.
