thinking about being a locksmith in Los Angeles, advice?

Postby machinist » 10 Aug 2006 5:18

I haven't posted here in a while now but, those of you who've seen any of them know I do work actually work in a machine shop and and my handel is actually my trade. Unfortunately I was laid off a few months ago and I've been working odd jobs and getting by O.K. but, I'm curious about being a locksmith Iwas hoping maybe someone in the Los Angeles area could enlighten me about what its like? Or what I can expect? Thanks in advance.
If you can't make it work try yelling "aww d*****t!" and throwing your tools it never worked for my pops but it entertained me :)

Check out your local phone book to see what competition will be like. Remember that phone books get printed once a year, so you wont appear in there for a long time. Calculate how much it'll cost to get listed in each book in your area, and see about a 4 line in-column ad so you stand out (at least some).

California locksmiths need to be state licensed.

You might want to just call around and ask if any locksmiths could use an assistant. There are probably a lot in your area, so you might get lucky.

I wouldn't dare try and start my own buisness, I'd find a sucessful company and just work for them.

I'd say go for the orange country crowd, geez from what i hear from people who visit out there, you can throw some diamonds on a kwickset and take out a dremel and diamond engraver and put Gucci on it and sell them a $8000.oo lock.

I say that becuase there are private neihbor hoods around here that i will kill to do lockie work in.. i am sure the lcokies actually do kill.. anyway we don construction work in these places sometimes.

Its absolutly unbelieveable what people will pay, for either looks, superiorty, or just lazyness. Thats where i hope i get sent for a lockout or replacement/service call. :)

It actually reflects the technology refinement and modern-age locksmithing where advanced resources and a great deal of study, technique, expertise, common sense, experience, and spontaneity come into picture. Thanks. :)

Have you been to our L.I. Meetup in LA? We have a couple of people there who are thinking of doing the same thing. You'll be in good company there I think. Our next meet is this Friday on the 18th.
