Effect of the economy

Postby Daggers » 24 Jan 2012 22:12

I went to a local locksmith and was having a converstion when he mentioned that all the locksmiths in the area are having increasingly less business. He's been in the business for 25 years and his boss has been in it his whole life with his dad who was also a locksmith. The boss's brother (also a locksmith) was also suffering from lack of business. Is this happening to any of you? I was planning to go into the business but now i'm not so sure since I heard this news.

@Daggers:

Perhaps there are too many locksmiths in the given area...

That can sometimes happen even during good economic times...

A given geographic area can only support so many locksmiths...

Sounds like the supply is too plentiful for the demand...

What general area of the U.S. are you in ?

I must say, the last few weeks have been perplexingly quiet. But we are coming up to tax time and it is only 1 month after xmas so i suggest that people are paying off their big spends at xmas last year.
Combine that with the quantity of scammer companies blanket advertising across the web and other mediums, it is really tough to compete. If i get the calls i usually win the job but the secret is getting the calls.

@Daggers:

It becomes more noticeably apparent when new construction slows down if there are too many locksmiths in a given area...

Business is doing very well. We had about 4 years a bit off but the last two have been as good as our best. Locksmiths actually have a business which can do very well even in times of a bad economy. Unfortunately when people lose their jobs the locks get changed, when there are foreclosures and evictions locksmiths are needed, when crime increases so does our business. Conversely when people start hiring and business expands they add locks and doors, offices that were once empty need rekeying; when foreclosed homes sell then a locksmith is called to rekey the house....
