This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

Please help with inventory / tool list

Postby SeanGallagher » 22 Jul 2012 21:38

As you can tell I'm quite new here, doing a lot of research etc. I was hoping to find a nice up to date list of the usual inventory a locksmith would have in the US. I'm not only concerned with tools, but spare hardware as well. This could become a very extensive thread.. Please edit/discuss/add as we go. Here are a few thing I have come across so far.

Tools

Lock pick set, many different tension wrenches & picks
Plug spinner
Long Reach Tool set, air wedge etc (big kit)
Jigglers
Schlage Wafer Lock pics
Gas cap key
Bump Keys
Pad lock shims
Kwikset security lock reset cradle
Broken Key removal kit/tools
Pick Gun
Suction light to use while working in vehicles
Pad Lock shim kits
rekeying kit for major lock brands(pins & gauge to identify what key pins needed)
Key Duplicator

Tools for installing lock onto new door area

Hole saw kit (drilling holes for new locks)
Spade bit (drilling for new latch into the bore)
Razor blades
Chisels
Square
Tape measure
Good cordless drill with backup batteries & kit of bits
Screw Drivers

Hardware Inventory

Keys? I'd imagine you must stock every single most commonly used key for duplication
New most commonly used lock sets

I think there is a similar thread, but I would say the Schlage wafer picks are pretty useless these days. Gas cap key is a waste too. You will need a code machine. I would add a drill jig (nice but you can do without it). If you plan to do doors, get a door dolly and pry bars. A hinge doctor and a squeeze play are used almost daily. Under the door tool. I use an impact driver on almost every job as well. If you do safes you will need another set of tools.

You can toss the pad lock shims also.

Check out the other thread with basically the same title.
