A power file is the foot of a kangaroo with extremly sharp toes hooked up to a small powerful motor. Sorry, not available for export to Canada......Well, thats my theory anyway.

I pay my guys $25/hr plus commission.

They supply their own vans and tools. I supply uniforms, workload and support.

Yeah, belt files are cool as walrus snot.

I'm on a commission, I get 30% on lockouts and 40% on locksmithing. 40% on everything on nights and holidays. I've had a couple of weeks I made over $1000, but most of the time I average $500 - $600 per week. It requires an lot of hours being on call and available. If I didn't like it so much I would not make myself available the 96 hours a week required to keep the job. Only been doing it 91/2 months.

was wondering? What exactly do most locksmiths do on the field? Install locks, service locks, open them? Or do you install automatic and self door closers, panic bars, magnets etc ??because in my line of work, glazier. After installing the door ,the glass,we install pretty much all the hardware.Door closers, panic bars.We even sometimes change the locks !!!!

i do alot of roller door installations now, not really locksmithing but really good money, when i first started being on the road i was doing alot of the contract work, so basiclly repairing/ replacing locks, rekeys stuff like that
Now i do a bit of safe work like installs, moves, services, repairs and openings, now and then I will have to replace wooden doors or transom closers on aluminium doors, and now im doing a bit more work on auto gates.

That's a hard question to answer and be specific.

My lockout guy does nothing but that, lockouts. He unlocks cars, doors and anything else that can be locked and nobody has a key handy.

My safe guy does bank service work and general safe work. He is usually busy servicing bank equipment....teller drawers, vaults, safes and safe deposit boxes. He also opens safes with lost combo's or malfunctioning locks or lockworks. He installs safes, removes safes and relocates safes.

The car guys make their rounds from dealership to dealership and auction to auction fitting keys to cars when they are lost, rekeying cars when keys are stolen or lost and repairing automotive lock cylinders when they are damaged.

The door guy does anything related to doors. He installs new doors, replaces damaged or worn out doors and frames, replaces or installs hardware such as locks, closers, panics, mags, electric strikes, ect. He also rekeys locks as needed and compiles masterkey systems.

I've got a general locksmith that can follow behind any of the other guys and catch them up when they are to busy to handle the days work. He usually spends most of his day rekeying locks and doing minor hardware installation such as levers, panics, deadbolts and closers.

I answer the phone, schedule and dispatch jobs, invoicing, payroll, keep up with inventory, parts ordering, making sure we have whatever we need to work. I also do walk through estimates with customers and help out everyone else when and where I can.

I can still write masterkey systems, install any hardware put in my hand, rekey whatever comes up and have never had a car that I could not fit a key to. The only thing I do not mess with is the bank business. I'm not a safe tech and have never claimed to be. I know my limitations :)
