Automotive Ignition Work

This is the old Locksmith business info area and will be broken down to fill in the new sections below.

Automotive Ignition Work

Postby yng_pick » 22 Jul 2006 18:15

Hi!

I work for a locksmith, and have for coming on two years, doing key cutting, benchwork (rekeys, etc), taking calls, and trying to learn what I can in the meantime.

Im very lucky to work with a locksmith who has been in the business for over thirty years, he is a wealth of information.
I have learned some of automotive ignition work from him, and am able to create keys to some, rekey certain ones I come across, and.. not much else.

I am interested in learning more about ignition work- information regarding specific ignitions to specific cars. Looking around, I havent found any real collection of this information-

I am wondering if any of you know of a book/ series of books, that are very informative and cover most vehicle ignitons-

I'd like to find something like this, cause while I enjoy hands on learning, id like to facilitate the process.

Thanks for any information you can share!

erm...well, autos are advanced material. so not many of us are gonna be able to sure with you about autos. (im not advanced mat. yet) so i dont know how much anyone can help ya with that. um, someone else might* be able to recommend a book, but other than that, you'll probably be SOL as far as autos go. (or safes, or bypass, or any other advanced topic)

yeah; i figured it may be a shot in the dark-

i know i could gather information from manufactorers, from disassembling ignitions, and from asking about 1 million questions in shop lol- and i may have to do most of that, if i cant find anything.

i was lucky to borrow said locksmiths book concerning safe manipulation- now I am saving for a S&G lock to bring home, so that I can dedicate time towards that area. i know trying to get information on drill points, common safe set ups as far as where locks and bolts are located (and for specific safes as well)- will more than likely be quite a fun project in itself.

Fill out your profile so we know where you live and then in future questions yu may get more specific advice,

Auto disscussion is all advanced material but if your anywhere UK based check out the Haynes manuals in your local garages, for around £15-£30 a book you should get all the dissasembly instructions you want,

Alternitivley your local liabry may hold the books,

Thats pretty much all i know of on the book side of things other than these manuals on disc ebay is full of,

Please take some time to have a read of the rules to site and then have a look at the stickies around before posting,

Thanks for the suggestions regarding posting and the Haynes books. They look like an interesting series- Wouldnt mind picking up the other information they offer outside of locks either.
