Guy's,

Looking at moving down under and carry on as a locksmith due to the points. Looking on the web I see I need the AQF cert 3 .Does anyone know how it would compare to the UK as there's no real official standard here?

Cheers

The national college in OZ is NMIT based in Melbourne. Max Cherry is the principal. Contact the MLAA for further info.

Sorry boys- been away for a bit. Thanks for the replies and the information. We're going down for a recce next February. Adelaide is where we're hopefully looking at moving to at the moment. Seems to be a lot of new opportunities going at present. Been doing this job for 2 yrs now but as there's no formal qual in the UK I need 6 yrs experience if we're going over on my points. All fun and games. Cheers

I worked in Adelaide for a couple of years. There are a number of locksmiths there. The largest of which is probably API. The Adelaide branch is run by a mate of mine (actually my apprentice from many years ago).

There are many smaller lockies too. Bilock has it's national sales office there. There are some good tradespeople there.

Adelaide is well known as a single mother city. Too many divorcees. Probably because of the slackest marijuana laws in the country.

? API are'nt in Adelaide and Bilock certainly don't have a sales office unless it's very recent.

Re the initial query re emigrating - you are going to have major problems. Lockies got added to the MODL then the TRA moved the goalposts to block all non formal training / skills assesments under pathway D ..

Unless that is changed you've got serious problems ..

The National Sales Manager for Australian Lock Company (Bilock), has his offices in Adelaide. I speak to him regularly. API recently bought out a large locksmith company in Adelaide (Northern Suburbs). It is managed by a former apprentice of mine and is averaging turnover of around $35K per month.

What is MODL/TRA.....how does it affect locksmithing.....There is no licensing in South Australia for locksmiths (unless there has been recent legislation) that requires formal adherence to government recognised training. If there was, then correspondence courses like Stotts College would not be allowed to exist.

aussielocky....i think you need to check your facts...pal!

If you are seriously looking at emigrating and you don't know what MODL and TRA mean then you really need to start some research !

Try www.britishexpats.com and read the migration forums ..

MODL - http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general- ... demand.htm

Thats all well and good. There are listings for locksmiths as an in demand trade.

But it claims licensing as a requirement, yet South Australia has no licensing laws. Victoria, NSW, WA and QLD (i think) do though.

What is TRA? Thoroughbred Racing Association?

Trades Recognition Authority / Assessment. They have to decide whether foreign skills or experience are equivalent to Australian qualifications. And right now anyone wanting to come from the UK for example has about zero chance as they require an almost exact equivalent to the Aussie TAFE qualification which just does not exist ..

Your Adelaide info must be more up to date than mine.

Who did API buy in the northern subs - Overland ? 35K, big deal they must be a small firm with 1 or 2 staff only then.

Hi, I’m new to this forum and am in the same situation as Gareth; I’m a UK locksmith and was planning to immigrate to Australia in the next few years. However, I have no qualifications just work experience and the only qualifications you can get in the UK for locksmithing are two-five day courses run by The Master Locksmiths Association, which is hardly the equivalent to the Australian AQF Certificate III. And to quote the TRA

“Until further notice TRA will no longer accept applications that predominantly rely on evidence of work experience”.

And regardless of what state you plan to immigrate to you are required to have a skills assessment by the TRA. I was wondering if anyone knew my options if any, for immigrating to Australia as a Locksmith? (I have already used up my working holiday visa). Would I not be able to get an assessment based on my experience?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
