I wondered if any one could give me some clues on how to do what i what to do. I currently move from state to state going from ren faire to the next and i want to start a part time locksmithing sevice local only to the ren faires. i want to mainly focus on lock-outs automotive and campers so what would be the best way to go about doing this and is there any hoops i need to look for?

depending on the states you visit you may need to be a licensed locksmith (through the state typically). But if you plan on just working with the other fair workers you may be able to get around that.

You should first check out the info of the state you primarily live in then go from there. If you have a business license to do it in your home state other states may accept that like they do a drivers license from another state. When applying for a business license ask them about policies regarding working out of state.

Also you have to learn a lot to become a lock out specialist and you will also have to have a lot of training before you even truly consider doing this as a living or part time job.

old locks

I think you should hook up with some old lever tumbler mortise locks, as well as some modern high security british lever tumbler locks, you can do the whole "ye olde locky" thing for the fair goers and also hook up some clientele for the off season, which I think is right now, doing locks on some of thier individual castles. become an expert in trading antique padlocks, etc. as well as installing period piece wooden latches of the type that may have been common. this could be a very interesting specialization. As far as NDE goes, I think that for the big dogs on this site, there are still some antique locks that they have yet to work out, regardless if it was worked out by others in another generation.

You expect to make a living at lockouts at ren faires? cars and campers? Are they still doing all those soft drugs at the faires? thats so 1970's !
I think you need a wider vision of how your going to make a living. perhaps you could also build secret panels in walls. and dungeon furniture. in fact dungeon furniture is probably a good ren faire idea.

i work at the ren fairs normaly on the weekends and i make a ok living it. i don't do drugs and i don't spend that much time keeping up with what others do. my vision is about as wide as it gets being that i work leather, blacksmith, lampwork, and fix cars when needed to name a few, im one of the people that loves a challnge which makes lock work all that more enjoyable, i want to take a hobbie and help people with it and if i can make so money in the long run all the better.
