Just thought I'd warn you all about a job I was called to yesterday.
I turned up to a simple lockout and as always I asked for id from the so home owner. They had only a mobile phone bill on them, alarm bells began to ring.......
I then asked them about the type of lock on the front door and they knew nothing about it...... More bells
I then went to my van and called the police and explained the situation. They said they would attend asap.
I kept talking to the young man until the police arrived and began to question him.
Whilst the police were there a neighbour came out and informed us that the real home owners were on holiday and they didn't know the young man. They also had a spare key to the house.
The man was nicked and today I got a call from the police who told me the man had admitted trying to burgle the house and asked for 12 other offences to be taken into consideration. They told me he got the idea from a TV prog called the Real Hustle. I don't know which other 12 locksmiths let him in but I hope they get a bill from the home owners and a visit from the police.

Nice catch Gordy. Shows the benefits of getting into a good routine of checking ID and weighing up the customer etc before letting them in.
Any idea how he'd have paid you? Moody notes probably

Nice job Gordy. Sometimes those little hairs on the back of your neck are your best friend. About ten years ago or so, there was a rash of car thefts using a roll back tow-truck with fake names and such. They were taking the cars to get keys made from the smaller shops, pretending they were repossesing the vehicle. About 15 years ago, I made the decision to not assist car repo companies and more (usually just code keys). Not sure why, other than I found them to be vultures and unproffesional.
Don't believe everything you think.

That's what the show was called. "The Real Hustle". I remember seeing an episode where some chick called a locksmith and be basically opened a house that wasn't hers.
You should start a TV show where you show people that try shit from TV and get canned.

Really why pay a locksmith and wait around with more chance of getting caught. just force a door and its done quick. Dont think it will become a big problem.
The biggest problem i have is husband / wife situations, where one has kicked the other out, devorce etc etc, they have ID but you really dont know who is allowed in.
Had one last month, normal opening, lady on her own, had ID knew the house, soon as i opened it she went in the house and tried to pay be on a mans credit card (obv the husbands - cheek!) got a cheque in the end, then as i was leaving a hire truck turned up full of blokes and they started unloading the house. furniture and all. the poor bloke would have got back from work with half his house missing.
But you dont know whats gone on, nothing came of it so it was legal, but it makes you feel really bad and its to late to back out. I was going to go back and try to stop them as i would have got myself a kicking i reckon.
Its a tough job. gotta use your head.

In my state there are no laws, their trying to grt a bill passed, itll make you get several types of ID:name, address, tele#,birthday,DL or stateID,car reg and tag#.Keep it for one year.I like getting enough info to make me secure Im not helping a crook, Butmost people locked out of their house dont have the info on them. So i guess asking a neighbor would be a good idea, hadnt thought about it. Seen the show,I sort of like shows that show the criminal mind at work, helps us counter the attack.
