Thinking About the Field...Any Advice?

So, I've been picking locks for almost 2 years now and it's definitely becoming more than a hobby. It was funny because I came into the navy an electrician, and now that I'm out, I'm considering going into the locksmithing field. But, I don't want to be a full blown locksmith. I'm more intersted in what the big companies are developing. I want to get in with one of the big companies but I don't know what job opportunities are available. Since I used to be an electrician, I think that I could really use that experience in the direction that physical lock security is going.

Can someone point me in the right direction to see what job opportunities are available to me and what kind of classes & courses I will have to take? Thanks for any advice you guys can provide.

If there is a Locksmith school in your area I would suggest looking into it so when you go applying for jobs you'll look better to the employer.

They will send you notices by e-mail when a job opening in the field you are looking into opens up and are available to you.

There is always the various career search engine sites. When you put into monster.com for example "locksmith" you end up with several results that aren't actually locksmithing jobs like you said but more for people who have a general interest in maintaining and repairing locking and electronic locking devices. So somebody with electrician background can probably get very easily into the electronic locking field.

The other option is try and find company's who already do that kind of work (for example the electronic locking) and call or put in a resume. Turns out that kind of stuff actually pays off sometimes.

thanks for the help, guys. I think that either way I go, I should definitely become licensed as a locksmith first. I guess that's step one. I'm already licensed as a journeyman electrician, so I guess I just need to build from there.

I've heard of monster.com. I will check it out and see what I find. thanks
