Nevada licensing question

When buying things like lock picks and other tools online, I've read that there are laws stating that you have to be licensed to receive these items through the mail. (If this is wrong please let me know) I figured rather then test what I've read I'd just look into a license, after all it can't hurt to have either way.

Anyway, after looking around and attempting to use the search feature for this site several times (as well as searching Google), I haven't been able to find anything out about specific licensing/certificate requirements in Nevada other then the NRS codes posted in another forum.

All I can gather is that you are suppose to be permitted, but I haven't managed to find any information as to what the requirements for this permit are. Are there any locksmiths in Nevada (Clark County or in Las Vegas specifically.) that know either off-hand what the requirements are or where I can find them?

If not since the Sheriff of the county (Clark in this case.) is the one who is doing the permitting, I should be able to just contact him/her, correct?

Any information anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

I have seen that, and if you follow the link for Nevada you wind up either on a small PDF file that describes why the permit exists, and has a link to the NRS codes saying that it is required, other then "failure to pay child support or comply with certain subpoenas or warrants" making you ineligible, I don't see any actual requirements. Is...that tall or do I need to get my glasses checked?

Other then more in depth explanation of the child support all I'm seeing is

NRS 655.070 Permit: Requirement; investigation; issuance; renewal; report of change of address.

1. Every person who wishes to operate as a locksmith or safe mechanic must obtain a permit from the sheriff of the county in which his principal place of business is located.

2. The sheriff of a county shall investigate each applicant and shall issue a permit to each applicant who qualifies under any ordinance adopted by the board of county commissioners of the county which regulates the occupation of locksmiths and who is found by the board of county commissioners to be suitable. An ordinance adopted by the board of county commissioners must specify fees for the issuance and renewal of a permit.

3. A permit expires 5 years after the date it was obtained and may be renewed.

4. The holder of a permit shall have the permit in his possession at all times.

5. The holder of a permit shall report any change of address of his principal place of business to the sheriff of the county in which the permit was obtained within 10 days after the change occurs.

So will it just come down to essentially having a good background and...the sheriff being in a good mood that day?

Unless you really want to do locksmith work you don't need a license to buy lockpicks. The company puts that on their site to release them from liability. Just order them. No worries.

Good to know, but I'd still like to look into that. I'll try contacting the sheriff when I get a chance and see what happens. I'm sure there's an e-mail I can use somewhere. Lol

i know this thread is old, but i'm curious about the same thing. does anyone here have more info on this? (nevada legalities for business, not buying tools.) i'll keep looking into it on my own, but figured this would be a good place to ask and maybe find someone that knows first-hand...

There is a law on the books in Clark county requiring you have a sherrifs card and some other hoops for you to jump through. This law is unenforceable due to several blatant voilations of state and federal law. Contact Gene Sr. At Genes lock 702 566-GENE for more information. Gene is the prez of the NPLA (Nevada professional locksmiths assn. ) by the way don't expect a lot of help more than basic answers from Gene, as he doesn't like Any competion. Hope this helps
