Quickset problem

Postby LockNewbie21 » 9 Mar 2006 19:45

I have this quickset dead bolti just bought from lowes. Any way i picked it and as you know the dead bolts need to turn 360 degrees to open. Well i can pick it to 180 degrees then it stops and seem to be blocked buy something. I though tit was broke. So i reset it and used the key adn bam 360. So i tried again same thing. So my question is why is this quickset dead bolt freezing at 180 degrees. i also tried the one on my back door and front door.. yea not very secure house any way they do the same thing. Any help as to why it freezes at 180 or a half a turn would be appreciated.

You might want to try reading the MIT guide thoroughly. It describes a possible problem and solution.

also the search works well just have to wade through all the useful information.

If you would find the time to take that lock apart, just to look at the inside and understand how it really works, it would most probably answer your question.

If not - this exact problem has been discussed serveral times here on the forum, so the thing to do is to listen to Isakills advice and try to search.

Good luck.

Ok, what is happening is you have picked the lock and the bottom driver pins are in the top of the plug and the top pins are still stuck in the shell with the springs pressing downward on them. When you turn to 180 degrees the spring loaded top pins are being pushed into the bottom open portion of the plug (keyway). To solve this problem, insert the back straight edge of your pick and push the top pins upward while you continue to turn the plug with your tension wrench. This will force the top pins back up into the shell and allow the plug to finish rotating the full 360 degrees.

Hope that helps. If you still need some help, drop me a pm and I'll see what I can do.

Good to hear that solved your problem. Not all locks will do this, Kwikset just has a very wide opening in the bottom of the keyway and it is due to this profile that the top pins can fall into the bottom of the keyway partially.

The reason search and the MIT guide is so "thrown" at people that ask questions is because there is a wealth of information to be gleaned if the person would just take the time to look for it.
