I was doing some thinking of our hobby more or less art of lockpicking and the negitive critisism it gets. I realized this today as there was a robbing of a local conveince store. The method of entry.... broken window. The robbing of a local bank..scary thing its only about an alley ways down from my house. Method of burglury.. armed holdup. Now if you take this common... well in my area instances that theft occurs, its all to common almost second nature for a gun or a bat for a window to break is involved. I have never heard of well maybe in history books or on the discovery channel of worlds greatest theieves where the art.. notice the word art of lock picking was used. Now My thoughts are why is this such a taboo if you will sport hobby or expertise to the general public? There only saying against civilized people like us is ohhh you can gain entry with out a key. Well so can a bat and a steel toed boot or a brick? As proved buy the latest robbary around my parts. I think people actually see past the skill and concentration level..CHI, i you may that is really involvled in no what i like to call picking... but manipulation and defects in a locking mechanism used as a deterant. I mean really people if theres money locked behind it... odds are the lock will take so long to pick to most that you will be spotted and arrested and servered your sentence before the lock is comprimised. I dont know, i just think its a very accentrick point of view on a group of so called criminals who in reality just enjoy a good puzzle. Well to the non criminals in here one day will come when people realize this till them keep pickin!...

Today I was walking out of my apartment building and there was a lady I have seen many times and she forgot her keys in her apartment before she left. I knew it was like 40 bucks to have someone come and open it so I explained as calmly as I could that I can try to pick it. I figued it would be easy enough since I have picked my own door many-a-time.
She gave me a weird look and said she would rather have maintenance come. So i guess if her place gets broken into ill be first on the suspect list. :-/

Uh oh, that's why i'm so reluctant to tell people I can pick a lock. Either i'm told i'm a nut or i'm put at the top of people's DO NOT TRUST LIST.

Ivg2k I know what you mean, you really need a way to show people how lock picking works, they figure you'll screw their door lock up, it really is all on how you present your self, not too many occasions you get to use your skills for good.
I supposed things to say is, you're practicing to be a locksmith and have some skills that would allow you to help that piticular woman out, yadda yadda.
I had more to say when I read this topic but I just zoned way the crap out, haha sorry, but yeah, all in your Presentation.

I think I may have read it wrong... but does this suggest that some members here are criminals? Which would kind of defeat the whole post. Or are you rather saying that the people here are non criminals?

I dont mean to be a prick but I cant help but believe that some people who venture to this site are criminals. The people who are active on the site probably are not but im sure some people come here and use the information for b@e.
But of course the easiest way to get past most locks is bil ol' bolt cutters so this site may be useless to most.

Thats kinda what I figured I thot the mods here scared away the crooks pretty quickly for the most part
er... that is unless some of the crooks also enjoy the hobby of lockpicking

Well this site is open to all - I'll bet there were crims when the site started, I bet there are crims now, and I'll bet there will be crims later...
I mean let's face it - you really can't be 100% sure about a faceless person who posts on a webforum...
We can't say that lockpicking is not used in crime either now, because recent;y an 11 year old girl was caught doing it to gain entry.
It's for this reason I support LSI, Toool SSdev, and any other club/society/group which promotes ethical lockpicking... At the end of the day it's fun, it's relaxing, and challenging - it's something I can do when it rains outside and can't go out, it's something I can do when I'm feeling sick. We can't stop criminals, but we can at least maintain some integrity for the hobby and encourage and enforce it from an ethical point-of-view.

We all should know that if you wanted to be a criminal, it's easy to just bluntly open anything, lockpicking is a hobby/skill/art yadda yadda.
Watch that show "It Takes a Theif" on discovery, they don't know much bout picking locks, or I have never seen them even try to pick one once, but besides that, it's way more easy to just break something open and get what you need rather than spend the time learning to pick and lock then picking the actual lock to steal something.

You know, it's funny. I think the main reason you don't see crimminals picking locks, is because it's initially too difficult. And most people who would steal from someone else don't fit the personality type of determination, and research. Wrong demograph.
After you learn to pick a few locks, you begin to understand that most anyone could do it with enough time and dedication....but they don't persue it.
Chalk it up to laziness or indifference, I guess.
But it's funny to think that many of the security measures people use to safeguard their personal effects are protected by one major contributing factor................lazyness.
There's no replacement for displacement.
