wow, thank you Jeremy for all the great info. :D I recently got a simple kwikset bump key and got it to work a few times on my front door. I stopped doing it though because I thought I would look suspicious messing around with it after a while so I bought a cheap deadbolt to practice on. The series 99 door has a really strong construction and must have been expensive. For a bump key should i get the sc-4? I have this idea that each different manufacturer has a different cut code for their key, should I try to make one myself or go ask my local lockie? I don't know him personaly but have done business with him before.

Thanks to everyone for all the helpful info so far.
(I don't think my Dad will let me try to fix his door because I might screw it up, I don't blame him.)

pickin' an' a bumpin'

You might want to practice on your back door instead, if that's an option. Semi-legitimate hobbyists don't need to arouse suspicion any more than crooks do.

If that's the 'C' keyway, then yes, Ilco's SC4 blanks will work nicely. I'm guessing you don't have the equipment to conveniently make your own bump keys. If you can get a locksmith to make one for you, go for it. But it's likely that you'll be turned down. So you might want to buy some blanks before you request the bump key! (Before they think you're up to no good.)

Today I tried to fix the lock with my Dads help and it was getting dark so we only got the dull grey cover off. I think I saw about six more screws holding the exit bar to the door. Do I have to unscrew these or is there a way i'm missing? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Clayton

Yeah, unscrew the whole dang thing from the door. It's nothing complicated.
