Well, I just got my pick set in the mail. I've been reading loads of guides to picking locks and all (including the very detailed MIT one), and it seemed easy up until now. I understand how everything works, I just don't exactly know what to do once I get my picks in the lock. I put my tension wrench near the bottom and put the pick up to the pin. I just can't really tell when it's binding or anything. If anyone could help me, I'd be forever grateful.

I know the MIT guide tells you what to do. But how do you tell when a pick is binding? How do you know when to move on to the next pin?

I would highly recommend you start with Digial_Blue's guide and remove all of the pins but one until you can feel what it feels like when a pin reaches the shear line. Then add another, and another, ... That will also help you get a feel for the amount of tension you need. (Not a lot).

Welcome to the forum.

Its a bit of zen really.

Follow Digital_Blues guide, its a trie4d and true method of learning, but while you are doing that just clear your mind and focus on the feelings in your fingers.

Most of us have a hard time judging whats going on with our hands if we can't see them. In this case, while we can see our hands, we can't see whats at the end of the tools and the same confusion applies.

You have to practice until you learn what the feelings are telling you, and then you get better. You can tell when a pin is moving and when it is bound, you can tell when it has set, or if you have to lift it some more.

All of these things will become a bit more clear if you just concentrate on what your fingers are telling you.
