Picked my first lock!

I did it! Hurray!

Yesterday I grabbed a rather old Master Lock No. 3 from my dad's trailer and tried to pick it. I read that with padlocks and that kind in specific, its best to use raking. So now I've picked it atleast 20 times, and well, I'm excited. I rake it a little to start, then I single-pin-pick the leftovers. I've found it easiest using a half diamond pick.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what kind of lock I should try next, please post them here.

That's good that you get the idea of raking+SPPing. I don't see a lot of new members who think to mix the techniques.

I'd say go buy a defiant or kwikset KIK or deadbolt from your local hardware store and keep going

Read around here, also, use the beginner's excersize, etc.

Good job Jace, you will find that both these techniques will work on the majority of locks, some will often rake open and others will only open with SPP'ing.

I would say, don't stop at padlocks, keep practicing with them, as you will find that some are more difficult than others. By all means experiment with other types of locks, this will only improve your ability to pick, and lean more towards more SPP'ing them as this will aslo identify what pins are in that lock.

Good choice with the pick (half diamond), you will soon see by reading most others posts, that pick will be the one of the most used picks next to the hook/feeler pick.
