i can open deadbolts and wafers and also tried some others but then i could never get it to open after taking a break. i'd always lose the feel and then it'd take me minutes to open it again. how come this happens? it's also because i keep forgetting how much tension i'm putting on when i actually get it open.. could i get some tips?

This happens because you have relaxed, taking your mind off what you where doing. This is not a problem, In fact it is a good thing that helps you learn to pick locks better and faster. We like to call these actions " Practice " Don't worry if you keep picking frequently you will become faster and better :)

yea, i'm practicing a lot now. i finally got the hang of raking and i can now pick individual pins. It's just that i have trouble with picking this new deadbolt i got last week. Do i need to apply more tension for newer locks?

Depends on the individual lock. But, always strive to use the least tension that causes a pin binding.

I agree with Chucklz ,

Always start out with the least tension when picking a new lock that you do not know that much about. Also if you can post a Pic of the lock, I am sure we can help you out even more. :)

i'm sorry but i don't have a digi cam but i'll describe the box. The box says 'Schlage' Maximum Security Deadbolt. says something about grade 2 ansi? whatever that is.. does this help?

I also had the same problem when I was starting out (and sometimes get it now)...

after picking a couple of locks successfully, I come back to them and can't open them. I guess if you approach the lock with an attitude of over-confidence, it doesn't help your picking ability.
Oh look! it's 2016!

I think thats how most of as are....Thats how it definately started for me.

See, it goes like this:

1. Curiosity
2. Fastination
3. Frustration
4. Elation
5. Obession
6. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for time and all eternity.
Why do today what you can put off 'til tomorrow?!

I think I have the same lock that you are practicing on. If it is indeed the same lock it will have spool pins. My lock had spool pins in positions 1-4 and if you are just beginning stay away from this lock for a little while. You may want to disassemble the lock and see if it does indeed contain spool pins.

I love the feeling i get when i have been picking a lock for a long time and never been successful and then realising your skill has increased incredibly when you open the lock in 5 mins. FEELS GREAT
