These two threads provide all the details and some good photos.

Nod to Shrub on the use of the search function. Note the original post dates on these two threads. 101 continues to be an amazing repository of information.
It's a good day when I learn something new.

Are all the balls the EXACT same size?

I know this is an open forum.
but anyone can SEE this isn't the best security feature.

better to re-key the lock after the workers leave.
than leave them with a "disabled" key
but hey... we are all just sportsmen here.... not professionals.

ohh and I almost forgot the original topic.....

If you increase the spacing slightly between the pins.....
the second (possibly 3rd??) set could be staggered
so that when rotated they don't pass over the holes.

(hey, if you patent that I want my $3.50)

I dont have a picture handy but in Australia, Lockwood produced the V7 locking system many years ago. It is basically a standard 7 pin key with a split keyway, 4 cuts on one side 3 on the other.

The Railways in Australia use them promarily still today. In it's day (early 70's) it was considered top of the line security. (It is not really) The system was actually easier to pick. Shimming was difficult though.

Basically the plug looked similar to your picture except there were only 7 chambers and they were offset from each other. Special machinery was required to cut keys too.

I picked up a Kwikset deadbolt today, and the plug had these same holes. No ball bearings, but the holes were there.
