Personally, I found the Visual Guide to Lock Picking (Third Edition) by Standard Publications to be very helpful. It does a good job of showing what goes on inside the locks and is written clearly and directly. It has a good amount of well produced diagrams and pictures, so as to make what goes on clearer as well as to give a good idea as to the how and why of locks innards. It covers picking of the various types of standard locks, along with the various types of picks, lock "anatomy", key impressioning (something I have yet to try), and one or two issues that could be considered advanced topics here on LP101.


As a newer member of the lock picking community I found it easy to follow and it helped me get a clearer picture of what goes on when you pick. I personally like the book and found that it's been a valuable resource in helping me advance in picking.

On a scale of 10, I'd give it a 9 - 9.5.

I have to agree with with this review. I also bought this book and found it amazingly helpful in learning about both the way many locks work, and how to attack them from a picking perspective.

It has been published, and several of us have just received our copies over the past few days. I've just returned from a week's vacation, and haven't had time to read more than the first 70 pages or so... but what I've read thus far has really, really impressed me with its thoroughness and depth of research. It would be a fantastic addition to the bookshelf of anyone interested in locksport.

On a side note, several people have discovered that Amazon.ca is selling the book for significantly less than Amazon.com, and they appear to be happy to ship into the US.

I have also purchased "Modern High Security Locks" by Steven Hampton. I thought the book was worth the purchase price and provided good reading with detailed illustrations.
