Help with Schlage Deadbolt

Postby brianp » 5 Jan 2008 2:29

I can pick standard kwikset deadbolts and knobs as well as quite a few padlocks I have come across. I decided to up the ante lately and get a schlage deadbolt for lowes to mess with. I was going to work on it one pin at a time and I realized that all the driver pins were spools when I disassembled it. Any tips for picking these? I can tell I am getting a lot of false sets and raking doesn't seem to be helping much either. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

BrianP

Try removing all of the pinstacks except one. Schlage locks usually have 3 spool pins and 2 regular driver pins. If you leave one pin stack with a spool in the lock and remove all the others it will halp you learn to pick spool pins. When you feel a false set ease off the tension and push the pin up. You will feel the plug rotate back as the spool moves past the shear line.

This one is all spools. I will break it down to 1 spool and start there. Thanks!

when i started i had trouble with my schlage because of the shape of the keyway, mine had 3 or 4 spools in it and i found it very hard to pick the spools at the angle you need to hold the pick. but after about a week of practice i got used to it and can pick it in about 10-15 seconds

im sure after trying you'll get it easy... Good Luck!

I just got a Schlage deadbolt too. Mine has 4 spools and 1 normal pin. I am up to picking 3 spools with the 1 normal pin. If you just work your way up eventually you will know how the spool pins feel, and you will get the hang of them.

It might take awhile but once you can start noticing how they act and how to pick them, it is a great feeling :)

I mentioned in another post that Schlage locks have a strange keyway for the pick to enter. I sometimes had the pick in at a slight angle, and I had tons of false sets. It just takes time playing with it, and picking it over, and over and over again, to get a feel for the type of lock.
