i swear on my life today i just picked my first lock using a fork and a safety pin... so it can work, if the lock is simple enough
i used to the fork for a tension tool though not to actually push the pins down, thats what the safety pin was for

Of course, havent you ever seen mission impossible? He uses a peice of splinter he got out of his finger for a pick, and his mind as a tension wrench.
