Even MORE obscure lock

Postby frollard » 3 Aug 2004 23:24

I keep asking about locks that would normally be straightforward questions, (knowing what everyone here knows) - but I keep buying locks that tend to have tiny quirks that make them a little impossible to work with.

question at hand: yet another tubular.

problem: the centre core isnt 'indexed' - theres no groove in it to insert my modified tension wrench. and indeed if I had a say...southord pick - it wouldnt insert into the lock anyway, because theres no groove. (the indexing pin inside the pick 'tube' would rest on the outer face of the lock, not allowing the pick to enter.

it appears as if the bitting on the OUTSIDE of the key (little tab thing) reaches a spot that would allow it to index with the core and rotate it (from within the lock area, once the key is inserted).

How would I tension this lock? (short of dremmeling out a line or an X in the center of the core, and using a screwdriver) ;)

Can you insert a modified paperclip into the keyway, and use that for tension? I have used them befor in extreamly small keyways.

A picture would help.

You wouldn't happen to have a 6 pin inverted tubular lock now would you?

no, standard 7-pin tubular tumbler, just no tension slot, the tension is provided by the 'main' key bitting - pic included....I think.

Step 1.) Grab new SO pick.

If new style:
Remove roll pin
Open lock
Replace roll pin.
Smile.
