Rytan Picks!

Next time you are shopping for picks, buy some Rytans. Rytans don't bend under picking shear. They are small and perfect for restricted keyways, and generally all types of locks. These are strait-up surgeons tools with ergonomic plastic handles. This is the third picket I ever bought (out of around 10?), and I still have it. I lost touch with about 5 of the 10 pick sets I owned because they just weren't that special, but this picket is special. Basically, if I go on a lockout call, this is the kit i bring. I mean, don't get me wrong, its not the best pickset ever made, but it deserves a spot in your collection. And there aren't many picksets I think deserve a spot in your collection. I don't like Peterson picks, or SouthOrd picks. So this is like a fine wine of picks.

I think your pick choice makes all the difference when picking a lock, there are often times when i know without the right pick I KNOW I am not going to be able to open the lock. Also I give rakes away for free, because rakes are of no use to a real lock picker.

Thanks for the review Doug. I was looking into a Rytan set becauise they offer picks specifically for smaller keyways.

I love my blue handled Rytans for restrictive keyways. the feedback they give is incredible, and with good control on the tension wrench they will last a good, long time. Just be careful they definitely bend if your not careful in the field.

Is it possible to remove the metal pick portion out of the odd shaped plastic handle? The main reason I never bought Rytans was because I didn't like the handle, and I didn't have a good experience with them the first time I handled one.

But where can we get some Rytans anyways (for hobbyists obviously)? Reading Doug's review has just given me the extra encouragement needed to start looking into them again for maybe sometimes in the future.

thanks for the review, I have only used Rytan picks once and much prefered them over the HPC and Southords that I have, also I'm in the market for some new picks and was looking at ordering some very soon so this helps me decide what ones I want to go with but the one problem is I don't know who to order them through and who would send to Australia.

There is one of the locksmith supply companys here that sell them but the prices are stupid and I'm not going to pay their prices, can you recommend anyone that would sell over seas and at a reasonable price?

Rytans are without a doubt among the best commercial picks made. The black handle picks are 100% (full size) the blue handle picks are 80% (smaller for smaller and restrictive keyways). The best ones are the Bill Deforest Sr hook/diamond and the regular hook diamond. The rakes are not bad either if you like raking... The biggest problem is finding a supplier that carries them. The last ones I bought about 2 years ago cost about $3.25 each.

I have a double ended slimline that gets alot of use, I love it for small keyways, I believe you can get there picks without handles though, one reason I have never bought any is that the picks with the handles are not full tang, meaning the pick don't go to the end of the handle, this means that they are suceptible to breaking out of the handle and being ruined.

when the handle breaks, you can get creative and make pick handles for them like ratyokes wooden handles
