How do you cut a bump key?

Postby chounin_man » 4 Sep 2010 10:37

Hey, i need some help, i have been trying to cut bump keys but have been messing it up all the time, so i need some info from you guys.

-I have been reading on a few sites that you should cut the tooth part of the key to a depth of nine or something, how big is that exactly?

-what is the recommended size/shape file?

-Could any of you guys give me tutorial?

Thanks for listening

I just use an ILCO 027 key cutting machine with a set of space and depth keys for Schlage and Kwikset.

Files.. why would you go through all that manual labor...

Have a good weekend! :P

ps. use the Search function on here. Everyone coming to the forum asking for 'tuts on how to do stuff, there arent too many tutorials, there are however some threads and stickies that have explanations and pictures. Search "bump keys", search "depth and space keys", you'll find what you're looking for. We can't hand you the keys to the city, without some effort on your part.

I had a bumpkey machine laying around the shop for a while but I think half of the 45 degree cutter is dull. It will only go about 30 degrees and the depth key only goes down to 8 1/2.

I use an HPC 1200 Blitz, load the appropriate code card and cutter wheel, then cut the key to i'ts max depth. Or if im feeling lazy i'll use the Codemax. Once i've got a perfect bump-key made, i'll keep it on a ring and never use it, just make duplicates of it and use those. The other alternative if you don't have acess to a code machine would be to buy them online and just goto a hardware store and make several copies.
