Master Keyed Locks

Postby Exodus5000 » 27 Sep 2004 11:43

I'm having some trouble figuring out what's going in terms of feedback from my Best locks which are master keyed. There is a muddy feedback, not the crips click of a pin setting. My guess is because there is more than one shearline? Additionaly some pins are very rigid, and it takes a great deal of force to get these to set. The lock(s) aren't dirty, but again I cant understand why this occurs.

Someone feel free to reduce my ignorance.

Although I am no where near the expert on master keying it would seem as if the problem with the pins being rigid and sticky could very possibly be poor machining tolerances used by the manufacturer of the lock in question. It is also possible that some foreign object ( toothpick , paper clip , a piece of the pin itself) has become lodged inside the lock there by causing a type of binding or grating affect. If possible take the lock apart and see if either of these two suggestions are the problem. Keep us posted as to what you find out because i know that I personally would like to know what is up with the lock. GOOD LUCK :D

There is a muddy feedback, not the crips click of a pin setting.

This is more than likely due to tighter tolerances, especially if its an i-core.
The less slop you have in the plug, the less slop you have in the pin chambers, things move "stickier".
This is the difference in say a best vs a kwikset. A kwikset the pins seem to pop into place, a best you have to feel the very minute set.

Even though you say the locks are not dirty, there may be graphite in there. This is, unfortunately, the factory lubricant, and unless you've flushed your cores very very well, there may be some still gumming up your works. Cores in padlocks give me a much sublter feedback than if i am holding them in my hand.
