Hey everyone my name is Matt and im new to this community. I have been lockpicking for at least 2 years now and i absolutly love this hobbie, but anyways lets get to the point. Iv'e been on and off about the lockpicking thing, but i recently picked it back up and start in again. Now so far I have been able to pick common locks like Master lock #5 and different varities of other locks, but i have ran across a few locks that sound like the pins have set, but i think its a false set. I'm really not sure on how to tell if it is or not so i'm asking for some advice. Also i have another lock that no matter how much tension i put on the wrench the pins seems not to set at all....can everyone give me some advice?? i would really appericate it!

-Thanks-

I also have just started posting in this forum, but have been working as a locksmith for a few years.
Why don't you post pictures of the locks that are giving you trouble, I know many people here could identify them immediately, and probably work with them on a daily basis. Also, look at the keys - while this wont tell you if there are security pins, it may help you establish if the pins are setting and not just binding from overpicking.
as far as

I imagine if you've been picking for two years you know that 'less is more,' usually. but one thing to try on locks that you cant get started on is, use hooks/lifters first to get a feel for the pins individually, then reset the lock, rake a few times and then return to the lifter pick to see what has changed. The benefit here is that while you arent going to feel much while raking, you can vary your tension a great deal, and then maybe glean some information after the fact as to what actually set or bound. Start there.

Im sure there are people on here that have more experience picking locks and can point you to more general advice. this forum is a good place to start it seems.

Thank you very much much for your reply. I will take everything you said into consideration, although i have been using all types of tension on this lock.....it seems that i can only open the lock when i use a rake. Now this is not normal for me because all the locks that i have picked was with the single picking method. Is it because its a older lock???

ps: its my garage door lock haha (my girlfriend has bought a set of locks that i practice on and i got tired of those so i moved to something else to challenge my skill)....i was thinking of taking it apart to see whats the problem

locks exposed to constant weather/age can have all kinds of strange properties.
I've run into locks that simply wouldnt start in the correct direction. I had to pick in the wrong direction and then use the plug spinner.
If you can rake it, you can almost surely SPP it. there is a trick/idiosyncrasy, and you'll figure it out if you keep trying.
