Recycling Center Haul

Postby Taemyks » 27 Nov 2011 14:41

I visited my local recycling center to pick up a few locks...Turns out nobody really wants them without keys. The guy I chatted with said he'll keep an eye out for more. There were boxes of deadbolts, just the bolt, but not many cores... I paid 1$/pound for them, except for the Hoppe lock that had a key, that was 1$. Total of 5 bucks! Now to get pickin!

2 Schlage
2 unmarked that look like Schlage
1 Yale
1 Titan
1 Kwikset
1 Hoppe w/ key
2 Master padlocks
2 American padlocks
1 Ilco Padlock
1 Slaymaker Padlock

This looks like a bear - Gonna save that one!

Nice score on that American! The collective sigh from the rural members without hardware recycle stores can be heard for miles.

I would have said:
"By recycling center do you mean the landfill? LOL! I was just wondering because I would love a haul like that for the price! LOL! But not if I have to dig through trash!"

This is the place where I found everything:

Basically if you are missing the lock key, you can ask for the locksmith, they will be able to replace that.

The first time i took my scrap locks to the recycling place i got $150 for the scrap metal. Now im dividing the aluminum and the brass a little more closely. I got $400+ for my 3 buckets of brass.

im keeping most of my cylinders now. I had an apartment complex that i couldnt talk them into replacing the deadbolts. They just wanted to master key all of them. I didnt want to rekey 138 deadbolts in my van so i took 20-25 of my brass kwickset deadbolt cylinders and keyed them up sitting on the sofa at home in the air. I then took the keyed cylinders and swapped them on the apartments, then taking the ones i took off back to the house to rekey. At the end i rekeyed the remaining cylinders to their masterkey and sold them to the complex as spares.
Kwickset knob cylinders are most popular around here. They tend to wear out and become difficult to key up, especially with a master pin. I keep a handful on hand to replace and save time.
