Some may say, lock picking is possible because lock picks are used to manipulate the pins in the same manner a key would.
Although this is a true statement, the actual reason we're able to pick locks goes a little deeper.
First off, what is lock picking?
Although a basic question, it is none the less important.
The definition of lock picking is simply manipulating a locks components to open a lock without using a key.
So why are we able to do this, why can we manipulate these components?
Since no manufacturing machinery is perfect, there will be errors or imperfections in manufacturing tolerances. Because of these variations in tolerances, no lock can be made perfect.
These imperfections, such as misaligned pin chambers or misshaped pins, cause one pin stack to be further from true center then the other pin stacks, thus binding the rotation of the plug. The particular pin stack that is binding at the moment is know as the binding pin.
Even though these variations in tolerances may only be a thousandths of an inch, by exploiting these mechanical imperfections that are common in every lock, lock picking is possible.
What about high quality locks?
Even top of the line, well made locks, have imperfections. Manufactures of high quality locks often use security features to make up for these inherent manufacturing imperfections. Features such as security pins, side bars, etc. are often used to try and make the lock more resistant to picking.
Remember practice hard, respect yourself, your hobby and the people it represents.
