Is it ok to ultra-sonic clean locks

Postby New York Novice » 7 Oct 2004 23:39

I recieved a box full of different American Padlocks that have seen better days. I was wondering if it is ok to ultra-sonicly clean them and then rebuild them so they can go back into service?
Thanks
Mike

Go for it, you may want to take an airhose to the body really well afterwards to dry it.
I would probably disassemble them first, clean them, dry them, repin them if you choose (its a good idea, to replace the springs anyway), lightly lube and you should be good to go.

Do be careful with some commercial air hoses like some gas stations use.

Some of these use an oil bath filter that creates an oil residue. Tiny droplets you won't immediately notice. Typically this won't hurt locks.

But it does tend to cause things to later collect dust faster. You'd certainly NOT want to blow out computer cases with such an air source.

Home/Garage compressors (Home Depot) and compressed air cans (sold at Radio Shack) tend to do a quality job but without oil droplet residue.
