I just started picking last week, and thanks to this forum and the links I have found in it, I have managed to pick my way through a Masterlock No1, No3, and have gotten my N55/40 open twice, all with single pin picking. Right now I am trying to leave my rake in my kit, and focus on getting the idea of how things are working, and seeing what I am doing through my fingers alone.
I couldñt have gotten this far without this group... thanks.

Get some new stuff to pick. I recommend the A1100 Americans. The American 5200. The Brinks RR lock. And any "low end" pin tumblers. Kwikset, and Schlage are good to start. I personally have been stuck on a Sargent Key in Knob, that has been driving me up the wall. But those locks I mentioned are fun to pick.. Good luck.

SPP is best to start with, but raking is an important skill too. When I first started I couldn't open most locks with the little snake rake. But now it is one of my favorites!

I'm probably doing it wrong, but I've been using the back of a rather short hook as a rake...
