I got my peterson slim euro reach tool in the mail today and have used it to great effect on an american lock by raking. is this what other people do, because i thought it was an SPP pick?

I would not recommend raking with reach tool, especially if you are just starting out, we tend to be a lot more heavy handed than we realize. I broke a southord rake about a month ago in a kwikset! That being said sure it is possible to do, but you are correct its intended use is SPP.

i have the same euro slender reach tool, and at .018, i would not advise raking, however, if it works, do it. but its not what its meant for, i use it for very light touch, and for very low pins that just need a tiny nudge, or when im using bottom of key way tension and i need to pick a low pin, buy my short hook gets in the way and over lifts the pin, then the reach is my go to tool for slipping it in there, without over lifting, but for raking, nope, i wouldnt do it, however out of frustration i will 'pull' it out, raking from back to front, but thats it.

but dude, if your slaying locks with that technique, and that tool, then do it! you dont need permission from anyone to be successful!!! just go for it.

I use a short hook to rake/zip across the pins from front to back about 20 times or so and it works great to open many locks but I havent been able to open an American with that technique. On an American I use it more to just set some pins and maybe get it into a false set before finishing up with SPPing.

Good job if you are opening American like that...
