I know pinning kits come in 2 basic sizes, .005 and .003, but is one better than the other? I live on the east coast of Canada so I can safely assume most locks I will be dealing with are schlage, kwickset, weiser and the like. Is one length more suited to these than the other? Would ordering one of each be beneficial?

Some swear by one, some by the other. Personally, I use the .003 kit, since you will always be within .001" to .002" of the correct size.

+1 for the .003 set. If you're looking to save a bit of coin, LAB has refill kits for their .003 and .005 sets that come minus the case and can be had for quite a bit less than the full set with case. If you have or can find something sturdy to put them in, you can get a great pin set this way.
I have a pretty nice one I use, which I'll eventually post a link for in the "It came from eBay" forum, but I don't yet meet the requirements to post there. If you'd like details in the meantime, PM me.
