hey i have a masterlock combonation lock. It has a keyhole in the back. What would be easier to pick. (or bypass) i don't think my picks can fit in the back... or they will get stuck. any advice? how should i go about picking this lock?

Easier to pick, small tension wrench and a S shaped rake. (Requires a lot of tension to open)

master with keyhole

Postby raimundo » 24 Jan 2005 12:27

the keyhole on the back makes it part of a large set of master locks probably from a school where the school authorites have the key to that lock, in fact it is probably the same key in every school in the country. the lock is too small for usual picks, but is easy enough to pick, only four pins. you could make mini picks with a large size bobby pin (hair Pin) cut with a file to a hook or diamond and sanded smooth with metal cutting sandpaper. not the tan sand used on wood, but black sandpaper, not NOrton brand which does not cut metal.

i believe if the masterlocks have a keyhole on the back, there's a way to figure out the combination. it goes somethign like this:

-take the lock and pull down on the handle. turn the dial until it "sticks"
-there are 12 "stuck points"
-when you turn the dial at each stuck point, notice whether a number is in the middle of the arrow
-the ones that don't land in the middle are fake, so are the ones that end in the same number (like 5, 15, 25, 35)
-the remaining number should be the last number
-now, the first number is the same as the last number mod 4 (so if last number was 36, then 36%4 = 0, so the first number is either 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36)
-the second number is the first (or third) number mod 4, + or - 2 (so say the last number is 36, the second number is either 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38)
-that leaves you with 100 combinations, so try them all

i've done that at my school and have gotten several locks like that. you can google "master unlocked" and find a site that tells you how (probably a better explanation than mine)

good luck =)

A tension wrench and a hook pick made out of bobby pins works great, but you only need to use the bobby pin wrench to have enough room for a regular pick. Also, only a very small amount of tension is required to start turning the plug but after that you need a lot of tension to fully rotate the plug and open the the lock. 8)

A hook pick made out of a wiper blade may work, its very small, almost as small as a paper clip, and 10 times stronger. Just grind down the notches like in the guide in the other thread above us??
