Abus is a tough nut to crack, with thier little keyways and security pins. Move on to something simpler like a master 140, and when you develop a better feel, go after the abus.

The Abus 65/40 is not that bad. Typically these have 1 standard pin and 4 security pins. The front one is usually the standard one.

First apply really light tension and ease up the front pin (with a small hook of course). If you get this right the barrel will turn a small amount as all the security pins get trapped. This is a *good* thing as you just learned everything there is to learn about the lock!

Now go down each other pin in turn. As you apply pressure on the pin, allow the barrel to turn backwards until the pin starts to move upwards. Immediately apply tension and feel for the pin to engage. If you get it right the barrel will turn back to the trapped security pin position.

Repeat on all pins. If you're lucky the lock is unlocked. Otherwise go back and feel for which pin have slipped out of the correct position, and repeat the security pin procedure.

These are really nicely made locks and it always surprised me that it makes them easy to pick.

The other padlocks in the range are variations on this theme, though the 65/20 doesn't seem to have security pins, and can in fact even be bypassed by operating the bolt directly. More of a 'luggage' lock.

haha the guys here are nuts about their search function...

anyawys, just go to google and search for 'mit lockpicking' or something...there are like 10 sites with the guide on them. so you shouldnt have any trouble finding it.

 It's not like I didn't tell him where it was:
...especially the FAQ

It wasn't intended to be sharp, and I don't mind in the slightest if people ask questions, but some members WILL give a lot of flak about it and besides there truly a lot of good information already on the site. Much more than you might imagine before you have a look. So it is worth exploring.

In all candor, the search function sucks. I'm trying to learn impressioning, and it's just not working out.... Romstar apparently wrote a huge paper on it, and I can't seem to find it anywhere...

ABUS can be easy to pick

Postby aox » 25 Jul 2005 9:58

Just insert your tension wrench but aply almost no pressusre just put your finger against it.Now put your pick (snake rake pick is handy) and with a jigle (up and down) motion put it to the end of the lock. Then with a couple of simple raking (in and out) motions the lock will open.
But remember almost no pressure on the tension wrench or it will not work!!!
