Can an Ace tubular lock be shimmed open?

Postby bandito » 30 Nov 2005 21:58

Hi all.

Just wondering if someone can help me on this. Is the any way that an Ace tubular lock be shimmed open such as in a regular pin tumpler lock? If so, are there shims available? Thanks for your help.

If you understand the reason that a standard lock can be shimmed, you will realise that access to the rear of the lock is necessary. This involves the tail-piece to be removed and a shim to be introduced between the pins, at the shear line.

The tubular lock uses a different construction...
The shear line is perpendicular to the plug and is shrouded by the cylinder housing. There is no way that a shim can be inserted...

Tubular locks can be manually-picked quite easily though.

I've never seen the back of a tubular lock. Not sure how the edges meet up.

Hey Mad Mick,

Thanks for your reply. I didn't think that an Ace lock can be shimmed, but then again I've never examined one from the back. Thanks again.

What I was thinking was some sort of "tubular" shim -- maybe circular or something...

In retrospect, I don't know how it would work. But anyway, as far as I know Mick's right, no such things exist.

As in shimmed open to repin it? no you cant and you dont need to either, a tubular lock is very easy to repin, the hardest part on some of them is getting the retaining pin out so you can disassemble it.

Tubular locks seem like they would be incredibly vulnerable to shim wire decoders. Scissors and a antishoplift sensor tag?

how do ya think your gonna shim this lock open? when you have to drill out the pin to free the plug
?. these locks are a fun project to re-pin.. if ya can't save the pin, just drill and tap. grind flush.
